As a guide for pregnant women it is a well written and easy to read, evidenced based book. Truly informative and emotional; as personal discussions and view points ensue which help, as a midwife, to understand the complex situations mothers and their families encounter when they fall pregnant after one or more Cesarean sections.

With an up to date section on the current situations in maternity units, be them obstetric based or midwifery based, this book provides support for any woman who is considering either a repeat Cesarean Section or Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). The next chapter considers risks, looking subjectively and objectively, the aim is to consider that everything we do in life has a risk, the risk of repeat Cesarean Section or VBAC are something that needs considerable consideration. Evidence is presented in an excellent format making it easy to understand and the content is extremely interesting!

Looking back and looking forward are essential for women, when they begin to make their truly informed choices, by using this book. Discussing how decision making takes place, tentatively considering the success rates and the myths which surround VBAC, inevitably the next chapter discusses 'how to plan for a safe, successful VBAC'.

Thoroughly considering the emotional and psychological impacts, the first section discusses the whole family and the 'aftermath' of the birth. A positive mindset is seen as being a huge contributing factor to any birth experience. Whilst this section provides excellent advice for women, i came out the end of it taking away one mindset - A Cesarean Section not only leaves a scar on the uterus.

Finding a team to support a VBAC may be difficult in some areas, guidance is given on how to prepare yourself and find both supporters and caregivers. Historically women have relied on family to support them however, lots of factors may mean that this is not possible and women can be left feeling isolated. I'm pretty sure handing this book to the most unsupportive of people would encourage them to support any woman making the decision.

In any birth the cascade of intervention is a real threat, making decisions in labour is difficult. Being aware of your choices and options in labour is imperative in succeeding in VBAC and consequently so is remembering that the end result often doesn't matter - the journey getting there is by far the greatest element of care.

This book is not only for women, every health care professional should have their own copy, reclaiming normal birth will be so essential in the near future and currently it's dying out.
