    Path to Becoming a Midwife

    http://smiffybaby.com/2011/12/04/pat...ing-a-midwife/

[Becoming a Midwife is a personal journey which goes far beyond medical training, textbooks and knowledge.

It is more than just a career choice.

It is a calling to something greater.

A passion and desire for a rewarding and meaningful career.

It has become more than just a job for me.

It has become part of my identity.

It is far more than Monday to Friday 9 to 5.

Do you agree with the above? Disagree with any of the above? Anything you would add to the above?

Everyone will have their own personal journey whilst studying midwifery but I was wondering if anyone wanted to share anything they've specifically learned/discovered about themselves?

This is very untrue for a lot of mid recruits. For midwifery to be just a job is not necessarily a bad thing. I certainly hope I can maintain my own identity separate from my career.

Re: Path to Becoming a Midwife

More so than being a mother (see other topics on forum) being dedicated and seeing being a midwife as so much more than a job is ESSENTIAL!!! Every good midwife I have ever come across knows that if we didn't love this career choice of ours we would not do the extra things we need to do to make this job worthwhile. How many other jobs see you reading textbooks late at night, meeting students on your day off, worrying about 'clients' and phoning at 2am to check they birthed their baby and are ok? How many other jobs would be such a lifelong commitment? A passion? What other job would leave you going home having not eaten for 8 hours, or had a wee, where you are covered in unmentionable things and a bit smelly, with a beaming smile on your face, saying what a GREAT shift that was!!??!! Midwifery is a career where you are not a cog in a machine, but a piece of a jigsaw which has been around for hundreds of years, able to shape the future not just for yourself but for women around the world and have a real impact on women's experiences everywhere. I haven't lost my identity in my career, if anything it has allowed me to grow as a person, to consolidate myself as a feminist and as a woman. I love my job - does it show??!!
